Parkinson’s sucks

Be Brave, Love, Musing..., Parkinsons Disease, Photography

imageThis is my mom . She has dealt with Parkinson’s disease for nearly 20 years . I ask myself why a lot . I know I should stop but I can’t help myself . Why would such a kind lovely woman have to deal with this ? Could it be from exposure to certain elements ? Could it be from past medications? Or do we just have a short straw in the gene pool?  Maybe it is our test to see how patient and kind we can be . Either way it sucks .

I was just up visiting Mom, she lives 5 hours away, and took my girls with me . My oldest daughter Ashley has always been close with Grandma. I felt really lucky to capture this photo of her perched on Grandmas bed . She was in the process of telling grandma stories and showing her pictures of her latest travels out of the country. Mom lives in a assisted living and doesn’t get out of her room much because she feels so out of control and self conscious about her condition and her jerking . We spoiled her this trip with essential oils, neck rubs, a haircut and pedicure. We left her with fresh flowers and cookies in her room hoping our presents would linger with her a little longer after we were gone. Hoping for us it would ease the guilt of leaving just a little. It’s never easy.
There are a few things we found over the years that have made Moms Parkinson’s better and/ or worse .
Parkinson’s is a disease of the central nervous system. If a stressful situation or person enters the equation the symptoms flare up . So although Mom likes to stay involved and informed in our lives, I try to involve her but not burden her with negativity . Sometimes I slip up because after all she is still my Mom, but I try to keep it positive.

It helps to keep routine and structure. Mom has her good times and bad times . She somewhat controls these symptoms witEven the famous Michael J Fox will tell you he has timed interviews and tv appearances with good times and meds .

The medication requip was a nightmare for our family. It causes addiction, obsessions, and hallucinations in many people. There was a class action lawsuit against this drug for addiction behaviors that started when people started taking the drug and ended when they went off it . It is prescribed to help the patient move better. It is not worth it . The neurologist we worked with had no empathy regarding the situation and said it was his job to make her move better,  period . Again, it is not worth it . Try other drugs , other therapies and do your homework .

Have a sense of humor and keep fun and activity in their life. Proper diet for maximum brain functioning and they will need to get extra rest.

We are just now trying essential oil blends. We were excited to see that they seemed to help calm her jerking. The serenity blend by DoTerra seems the be a good one.  There are oils also researched by the Young living  oil co. That may help as well .

If you enjoy a good Ted Talk on the internet they have some short inspiring speeches on Parkinsons. Just put Parkinsons on the search line.

It is a little different for everyone and hopefully someday we will know more on how to fight this, for now we treasure each visit . Maybe this little bit of our story will help another Parkinson’s warrior or their loved ones ❤️

I am posting again to this blog post something we discovered and think we will really like! Maybe you will too! There is a meditation that you listen to specifically for Parkinson’s disease. It is lovely and its from a sight called “health journeys.com ” we are also noticing that massage and stretching helps as well . Every little bit helps and we love to share ❤️

Spring fever in Southern Utah

Musing..., Nature, Photography, Reboot your life, sunshine, Travel, Uncategorized, Wild and Free

Here in southern Utah it feels like spring this week. It’s only February but the sun has come out to play for a while so I took my camera and headed to one of my favorite places.  Snow Canyon is like a crayon box to me and a photographers dream. You experience every color there from Deep red to orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. This is what I came up with. Enjoy!

This area down by the base of the massive rock walls has a nice cool temperature. I would imagine this was a nice area for the pioneers and or the indians to rest and cool off. It is near where the Pioneers that settled the area wrote their names on the rock walls with wagon wheel grease. The one massive wall is covered with bits of moss and runs up against another deep red wall. There were rock climbers scaling the wall nearby.

IMG_7991A crisp and cool fall day with the sun breaking through the pine trees in lake Tahoe . It is a spectacular sight to capture as Fall makes way for winter. We went around the entire lake in a day and enjoyed the sights, stopping at a fun place for lunch and even got to check out an art gallery and thrift store.

Be brave my darling…

Be brave

On the days when it knocks you down, be kind to yourself.

When you are not your best, when you are not thriving, be loving.

It will close you up and make you numb or it will make you feel too much.

When you get out of bed and make it to work just barely, be understanding.

Forget that it was hard.  forget that you had to force yourself, let it go.

When you couldn’t make a decision that once came easy, be kind.

It will show no mercy. Be patient.

It will show up when it wants to, and leave just the same.

It doesn’t care about your plans, It doesn’t care about your schedule.

It is here for a while, but not forever. Be brave.

It will make you cry, but you will get up and dry your tears.

When your creative voice goes silent, let it rest.

When you want to express your frustration, write your guts out.

When it takes away your taste, spoil yourself.

It will tell you to be alone. Take a breath and call a friend.

It will exhaust you, take a nap and be kind.

Tomorrow is just around the corner and as quickly as it came,

you will find it gone.

You will thrive and work and create and love and laugh.

You will be compassionate and strong and fearless and kind.

Be brave my darling…

Wow,  paint a wall in your house a happy color  (My color of choice is a watery blue) whatever color suits your fancy.  They call it an accent wall.  I’m going to call in my happy wall.  My delightful blue seemed like the perfect choice it complemented everything else in the room and the opposing wall and well,  it made me happy!

It’s crazy that something so simple can make my heart soar. It has always been a blessing to me that it is the little things that can tickle me and believe me there are days that I need it.  I stopped at Sherwin Williams and picked up a quart ( I should get something for this plug)
and a short time later sweaty and painted myself,
“I stood back and smiled.”
Listening to a little Jack Johnson while you paint never hurts either!

Reboot your life

Just when I was humming along getting familiar with blogging and doing my thing my Mac laptop decided it was on overload.  I happily sat down the other day and popped it opened, pressed down on the button only to find a dark screen that said, “your startup drive is full.”  Apparently my love of photography and my knack for keeping every little thing has finally caught up with me.  My world suddenly went dark and empty, a spiraling abyss. Ok, so I am being a little melodramatic but, I am out of commission.  I sit and stare at the computer and try again five minutes later. Nothing…  It just turns against me dark and cold.  The next day out of habit I want to grab the computer and click it on.  I have an Idea, I want to blog it, frustration mounts and withdrawal sets in.
Just as well I think,  I need to focus on other things for a few days and then I will get the mac into the mac doctor.  Which leads me to this thought.  How come when I am overloaded and my start up drive is full I don’t get to shut down.  Or do we just call that a “nap?”  I know like most people my start up drive does get full. Sometimes in juggling the roles of being wife, Mom, employee and more life can get pretty crazy and yes, a nap is what gets me through.  Sometimes when my mood get’s dark and the world seems cold just like my Mac I need more than a nap.  I need an adventure or a vacation really.  If a vacation isn’t a reality which most often is the case I can settle with grabbing my camera and heading for nature or some quaint place just for the day as a reboot.  Treasure hunting in an antique or second hand store and always dining with someone I love, My Mike, One of my kids or a friend. When I take the time to do this I am so much better for it later.  Tonight I went with my daughter for some dinner and I got a fortune cookie that said I will soon find new Adventure!  I’m ready, bring it on!
